This is ONOME OVIE presenting an environmental awareness speech at the Rhythm of Chorale ' Raise your voice to a cleaner environment campaign' |
Many
of us go about our daily lives, having picnics under shady trees in parks,
frolicking on white sandy beaches and experiencing the wonders of nature in different
places of the world, but have we ever stopped and thought about nature?
Have
we ever really wondered what this environment is?
Or
why the environment is important to us?
We
take these things of the environment for granted, using them simply for our
pleasure and not realizing the importance they have on us as a community. So
let us take a minute to look and really see why the environment is important to
us.
The
Environment is our surrounding in which we live. It is the source of life. Our
whole life is dependent on it. It directs our life and determines our proper
growth and development. Good or bad quality of social life depends on the
quality of our natural environment.
Do
you know the environment is connected to everything we need as humans to
survive?
Things
like the sun, trees, rivers, rocks, plants and animals etc are mentioned few. The sun provides light energy; trees provide
oxygen for us to breathe in and absorb carbon dioxide which can be harmful if
left to build up; our limestone works as a purifier giving us some of the
cleanest drinking water in the world; food is planted in the soil to feed us;
and the list goes on.
All
of our daily resources come from the environment itself.
Now
that we know just how important our environment is, it is our job to improve
and maintain it, not just for us but for future generations. We are responsible
for what happens in our environment because it is our home and without it we
would have no place to get clean air, good water and food. Without taking care
of our environment, we would have to suffer adverse effects including:
population health issues, eroded soil, dirty water, etc.
As
citizens of the world, each of us is responsible for the health of our planet. Many
people fail to see the bridge between the environment and the economy. Our
choices and our actions contribute to the well being or deterioration of the
environment. Yet, it’s the only one we have. If we don’t care for the
environment, who will?
Who
will preserve the quality of the air?
Who
will restore our natural resources?
Who
will help make the planet safe for many generations to come?
You
will!
Anyone
and everyone can participate in making our world a safer place.
Have
you ever thought about how your choices affect the earth’s well being and how
you can minimize the impact you and your family make on the environment?
From
the cars you drive to the products you consume, every choice you make on a
daily basis have one or more consequences for the environment.
How
about for your health and the health of your children?
How
about for your quality of life and that of other citizens of the world?
How
about for the choices you have of resources that are now being depleted?
How
about for the air you breathe and the water you drink?
Our
natural environment becomes unbalanced and unsustainable when it is polluted
and stripped of its natural resources by over-consumption. Our lives are at
stake as we find our health being affected by environmental toxins in the air,
water, and foods we consume. Our earth is a fragile place with limited
resources. The growing threat of climatic changes means everyone from individuals
to businesses must reassess their environmental impact and daily choices.
Consequently,
it is clear to see that the environment is of paramount concern for us all. Our
economy, health and nationalism are all impacted upon by the state of our environment
so; I leave you with words of Emecho Ted, CEO Geo Blue Nig
‘When
we as individuals understand the true value of where we call home, then we can
harness its maximum potential.’
What
can you do to show you care about the environment and contribute to its health
and longevity?
Lots!
Here
are just a few suggestions.
1.
You can conserve energy at home. By fixing leaky faucets, turning off lights
and appliances when not in use, and buying energy efficient products. Check
showerheads and toilets for leaks, and consider low flow models. Reduce the
settings on water heaters and household thermostats; limit use of air
conditioning. Make sure your home is efficiently insulated.
2.
you can also Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
Dispose of harmful materials properly, re-use or recycle things you no longer
need, and place recyclables in proper bins for pick up. For every ton of paper
recycled, 17 trees are saved.
3. Green up your life.
This you can do by Switching to solar energy at home if feasible, grow as much
of your own food as you can, use natural fiber clothing, and make your own
cleaning and beauty care products.
Educate
yourself and others as much as possible about the environmental issues that
concern us, and start taking actions that show you care about the environment.
Be a role model and leader for others. Each individual contributes to the
success of the whole world; I am reading this because it is good and, let it be a start of my contribution to saving our environment.
I won’t stop reading this message anywhere I
go, I will read it in my church, my school, to my parents and friends. I would
influence my friends to do same.
What
would you do?
You
should do something, one thing, anything.
One
little thing would go a long way in saving our world.
Stop
indiscriminate dumping of waste! In the rivers, on the road, in the drains etc
Stop
felling trees!
Stop unhealthy exploration of crude oil!
Stop the discharge of toxic substance in to water bodies!
Stop
pollution!
Thing
positive, it is the only way.
Thank
you
